Scrap Shears

Scrap metal is of crucial importance for iron and steel manufacturers.

The cleaner, denser and chemically more suitable the scrap used by steel mills is the higher the quality of liquid steel produced.  For this reason, steel manufacturers target feeding their furnaces with the required quantity of scrap in as few charges as possible and do not want out-of-standard and large pieces in the scrap.  That is why appropriately sized scrap is always more desirable by steel mills which is also advantageous in terms of stockpiling and transporting of scrap.

Although using oxygen to cut large pieces of scrap is a common practice by steel mills in Turkey, this method has many disadvantages;

  • Continuous gas consumption
  • High labor cost
  • Material loss during cutting
  • Harsh site conditions
  • Requirement of a high level of safety
  • Significant adverse effect on air pollution
  • Slower process

Especially due to the required high level of safety and significant adverse effect on air pollution, many European countries have imposed certain limitations to oxygen cutting and are encouraging manufacturing to find alternative solutions.  Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning in Turkey is also planning to impose such limitations on oxygen cutting in the near future.  This is going to allow eliminating accidents and minimizing release of poisonous gases during the cutting operation.

Additionally, as experienced by many steel mills and scrap yards, scrap shears easily pay off their comparatively higher investment costs in a short period of time and benefit the users.  For this reason, many companies plan purchasing a second shear in 6 months or one year after seeing the advantages of shears for themselves.

Due to the reasons explained above, shear manufacturers have developed different types of shears to meet the different needs and requirements of their customers:

  • Fixed Shears
  • Mobile Shears
